Beneath Shimanakas steering, Chūō Kōron was one of the powerful magazines of the 1950s and 1960s, publishing both widespread and literary fiction by established and up-and-coming authors, opinion-leading thought items by scholars and intellectuals. Returning to his college research after the struggle, Shimanaka was closely involved in publishing the 14th edition of the famous Tokyo University literary magazine Shinshichō, New Developments in Thought. After graduating from high school, Shimanaka majored in German studies at the prestigious Tokyo Imperial College. As a boy, Shimanaka attended Tokyo Greater Normal College Elementary School’s current-day Tsukuba College Elementary Faculty. Hōji Shimanaka was born on February 7, 1923, the second son of journalist Yūsaku Shimanaka, who would later rise to turn out to be the owner and publisher of Chūō Kōron magazine.

Shimanaka was a close good friend and the first writer of famed Japanese writer Junichirō Tanizaki and was an in-depth buddy to famed American scholar of Japanese literature Donald Keene.
